Some of our most prominent physicists are convinced that information is the fundamental substance of the universe (A. Zeilinger) and that all things physical are information-theoretic in origin (J.A. Wheeler). The world consists of a large number of events and the flow of information among events (Lee Smolin). In line with this type of thinking, the present book describes Nature in terms of information processing events, rather than material entities per se.
Understanding the world in terms of information processing events brings into focus the paradigm of meaning. For one thing, information is neither matter nor energy (Norbert Wiener); and for another, it is - in contrast to matter - an entity charged with meaning. Describing the workings of Nature in terms of information thus represents a paradigmatic shift in scientific thought.
In the new view, the fabric of reality is made up of events that combine both material and, law-like immaterial, aspects in a unified way. These matters are discussed in terms of the model of a general information cycle that is applicable to all types of information processes; including physical, biological, conscious and cultural events.
Nature turns out to consist of (1) four sets of elementary particles, (2) four types of fundamental forces, (3) four categories of laws and law-like entities and (4) four dimensions of spacetime. The question is: Is there a deeper significance to this 4x4-systematics? It turns out that each tetrad (set of four) exhibits the same internal structure; and that all of the sets together can be represented in the form of an asymmetrical dyadic decision-tree, the Tree of Nature , featuring a basic structure of six fundamental parameters, a substructure comprising 24 individual parameters and a triadic superstructure.
The Tree of Nature is constituted of a set of 15 pairs of complementary parameters, such as time and space, each requiring the other for its existence. Whereas the space-time complementarity is well known, the complementarity of the force of gravity and, the strong nuclear force, is not. It is predicted that a correct quantum-gravity theory will encompass the notion that these two forces are strongly complementary to each other; each implying the other.
